White Stripes‘ vocalist/guitarist Jack White has been very happy with running his own record label Third Man Records. The label recently released new 7″ 45’s by Wanda Jackson and The Black Belles (both of which I highly recommend), and fans are discovering more as the label expands its roster. All of the releases thus far have been recorded at White’s recording studio in Tennessee, but for a forthcoming series he will be documenting the live experience from different artists.
Everything will be performed live at the studio, and the sessions will be documented on video and later presented on the label’s website. The first session was done yesterday with The Dex Romweber Duo, and those who were in attendance had the option to buy a few songs from that show on exclusive dub plates/acetates. Those will then be pressed up formally and released through the website.
It’s a very punk rock idea, not unlike going to a show, talking with someone from the band and seeing someone silkscreen a T-shirt for you right there. The emphasis of these performances also includes being able to bring in audiences that are 21 and under, so they can have the live in-your-face experience that you can’t get from YouTube or television. The “live show” vinyl series also brings the old school vinyl asthetic to younger audiences who may only know about records second hand, and makes them become a part of the appreciation shared by those at Third Man.
No word on who else will take part in the series, but as soon as news comes in I’ll let you know.
