SOME STUFFS: The dark-pop stylings of greencarpetedstairs sees light in June

Nine years after Neil Ewing created the one-man project greencarpetedstairs, he is about to release his self-titled debut on June 12th on Fake Four, Inc.. He has done tracks and a number of remixes over the years, but now it’s time to get to know greencarpetedstairs a little more.

VIDEO: Yamin Semali featuring Rasheeda Ali’s “Are You Sure?”

When I saw the description of the video, I knew I would like it before I pressed play. The song starts out with a nice soulful vibe, then you have flautist Rasheeda Ali playing a great melody in the background, and then Yamin Semali switches from soul to a nice rap. This is how I like my hip-hop to sound, with remnants of the past but with a knack to look and move forward. I want more of this.

Yamin Semali may be known as one half of Clan Destined, but doing a solo project means he is relying on himself (and arguably can only blame himself) to make music in his own vision, which is what he will do with his forthcoming album, Yamin, due out this fall. Until then, if you like the video, you can buy the single via Bandcamp, which also features instrumental and acapella mixes for those who wish to take the song even further.

VIDEO: YB’s “Smokin’ With My N****s”

There’s a shot in this video where a woman is right at the crotch of a man, as if she wants to ask him “can I smell yo dick?”

I hope that wasn’t the case in this video, for YB had a video to do for his song “Smokin’ With My N****s”, and you don’t want to be rolling a joint while a woman inhales faint aromas of whatever scents you might have hidden in your pubes. Not a good thing. The video was beautifully shot by Iroc Daniels.

SOME STUFFS: Nouela to tour in support of debut album

Nouela is ready to release Chants, but she has allowed her label to make people wait for it, specifically on June 12th. In the meantime, she will be touring in support of it and you are able to check out the first single from it, titled “Suckers”.

The song is not called “Lickers”, for she allowed a dog to do this in her promotional photo but maybe in the future? Maybe? No? Tour dates? Sure:

June 3… San Diego, CA @ Casbah
June 5… Los Angeles, CA @ Bootleg Theater
June 6… San Francisco, CA @ Bottom of the Hill
June 8… Portland, OR @ Mississippi Studios
June 9… Vancouver, BC @ Media Club
June 10… Seattle, WA @ Sunset Tavern
June 13… Minneapolis, MN @ 7th St. Entry
June 14… Chicago, IL @ Shuba’s
June 17… Montreal, QC @ Il Motore
June 19… Cambridge, MA @ TT The Bears
June 20… New York, NY @ Piano’s
June 21… Brooklyn, NY @ Glasslands
June 22… Philadelphia, PA @ Johnny Brenda’s
June 23… Baltimore, MD @ Metro Gallery

For those of you who are curious about the ethnicity of this Seattle-based singer, and I know how some of you are. You see a face, and you’re like “oh, she’s mixed” or “ooh, she looks hapa, must be, I can see it in the eyes” or whatever. She is a mixture of Norwegian and Korean. You’re welcome.

Oh, you want her musical make-up as well? Well, her press release has already called her a melange of Carole King, Polly Jean Harvey, and Fiona Apple.

Chants can be pre-ordered from Amazon, and it will be released on vinyl (click the second box).

VIDEO: Smile’s “Eating Dirt”

Have you ever eaten dirt and smiled? Well, this is a new group called Smile, and this song is called “Eating Dirt”. The song sounds like the best things from each decade of pop and rock in the last five decades, and they just chunkified it. Smile is a new project from Björn Yttling (of Peter Bjorn and John and Joakim Åhlund (Teddybears), so if the idea of these two being together sounds dreamy and creamy, wait until you hear it.

For the record, the entire video is upside down.

What’s not upside down is their debut album, called A Flash In The Night, which was released yesterday (May 29th).

VIDEO: El-P’s “The Full Retard”

When I reviewed his latest album Cancer For Cure (read it here), I stated that it sounded as if El-P “decided to create music as if this was indeed the future, acknowledgment of the past, but it’s music being made for a dying world.” Then I see this video and it fits that description perfectly. This video contains images of cocaine, bongs, cars, cleavage, guns, and the New Thing album by Percy Faith & His Orchestra on 8-track tape. One of these things are not like the other, but it’s pure eye candy for an album that has already become one of my favorites of the year so far.

VIDEO: Scatter Brain & V-Rock’s “Criminal Minded”

The line “I’m still married to this game with a romantic/tragic lust” speaks volumes, and I think that’s one of many reasons why this song works. “Criminal Minded” is by Scatter Brain & V-Rock, and no, the song is not an ode to Boogie Down Productions. It does have shades of integrity, that’s the one connection it has to BDP (and okay, there IS a bridge in the video) but other than that, fresh ideas for a fresh song created by fresh individuals.

The song is from their Madness & Murder album, which you can buy directly from them.

AUDIO: Icebreaker with BJ Cole’s “An Ending (Ascent) II”

Brian Eno fans may enjoy this one: a new version of his 1982 album Apollo. For fans of ambient music, they will find this to be a nice revisiting, 29 years after the original was used for For All Mankind, a documentary on the Apollo space missions. Even though Eno himself called it “an attempt to write ‘zero gravity country and western”, it influenced a wide range of musicians to follow its path to where it would eventually become its own genre.

This new version is done by Icebreaker with BJ Cole, and will be released by Cantaloupe on June 26th. You can listen to what they did with “An Ending (Ascent) II” by clicking the Soundcloud player below.

SOME STUFFS: Sophomore album on its way from Teengirl Fantasy

Fans of Teengirl Fantasy will have to wait for three months to have a new album from them, but it may very well be worth the wait. Tracer (True Panther Sounds/R&S) is slated (I don’t usually use that word, but it might look nice on my resume) for August 21st and will be released on a good format (vinyl), a still decent format (CD), and the one that everyone can have (digital). The album will feature a few special guests: Kelela, Laurel Halo and Panda Bear. Almost sounds like a forgotten anime. You are able to pre-order the LP and CD versions by heading to

You’ll be able to hear the new music this weekend if you are in NYC and Chicago, as they’re doing a small handful of shows. Check them out if possible.
