RECORD CRACK: “Hans Trapp 01″ 7” compilation EP

Here’s an interesting project, a new 7″ EP compilation of German origin that puts together 41 different bands on one record. That is, on one 7″ record. Each band gets only 10 second to do whatever they want, and they’re all crammed on here for all to hear.

The record is packaged in a sleeve that unfolds into a 2-color silkscreened poster, and only 320 numbered copies will be sold. The entire project was put together by Guillaume Siffert, Nine Yamamoto-Masson & Christian Gfeller, but what you also want to know is “who are the 41 bands?” They are: AIDS Wolf, Lasse Marhaug, Xper Xr, Evol, M.E.S.H, Vom Grillll, Torturing Nurse, Buke & Gass, Stephen O’Malley, Erin Budd, Charles Edward Cheese Band, Valentina Vuksic, Troller, Stellar Om Source, Pierre Belouin, Gtuk, Government, Alpha, Skadden, Pataphisics, Arnaud Rivière, Night Music, Adan de la Garza, Martin Ain, Moha!, Jean-Louis Costes, William Strangeland, Lucky Dragons, Mr Marcaille, Ruben Patino, Antoine Chessex, NHKyx, Mick Barr, Lot Lizard, Der Tapeman, Slugbug, Dubknowdub, Hecate, The Feeling of Love, Marcel Du Swamp, Justice Yeldham & L’Ocelle Mare.

You can buy your copy directly from Re:Surgo! in Germany by clicking here. For a look at what the poster sleeves looks like, click here

VIDEO: Drainolith’s “You Paid For It”

The demise of AIDS Wolf has lead Alex Moskos to create the diverse project Drainolith. I say diverse because one day it may be a Moskos solo project, tomorrow it may be a group effort. Next week it may have a full orchestra, next month he will play twigs and toothpicks.

The song is from the Fighting! album on Spectrum Tools, which is out now.

VIDEO: AIDS Wolf’s “The Time Is Now episode 8 (Last Montreal show)”

As one of my favorite bands wrap up their existence together, AIDS Wolf have released a new video (shot by Laura Crapo) that is also episode 8 of The Time Is Now, which shows off the band doing their thing in Montrèal at the Casa del Popolo. This is also the last show they will ever do in Montrèal so if you missed it, their last show ever will be this Friday (May 11th) in Toronto at The Garrison (1197 Dundas St W.). Child Abuse, Gordon Monahan, and Not the Wind, Not the Flag will play before them to see them walk off into the sunset.

REVIEW: AIDS Wolf’s “Ma Vie Banale Avant-Garde”

Photobucket In this era of overly-celebratory accolades, everyone cannot be anyone unless they are “the biggest” this, “the greatest” that, “the utmost” whatever, so to say that AIDS Wolf are the craziest, most noisy band in the world would be just rubbing Tiger Balm on the nuts as a masturbatory gesture, and it might make things tingle, but it would also make things burn, which is not good. I will say this: if you’re reading this review and obviously if you got to this point, then you’re either a fan or think that the band’s name is crazy, hilarious, dumb, or all three. If you are a fan, then you know that they are crazy, they are noisy, and they are chaotic and every other word and term you can come up with. This is their new album, and it is insane.

Ma Vie Banale Avant-Garde (Lovepump United) can be listened to in a number of ways. On vinyl it is a 2 record set, and in vinyl speak that usually means “double album”. In the digital era, that simply means over “50 minutes, under 80”. In other words, a hell of a lot of music to consume. You can listen to Ma Vie Banale Avant-Garde as a sonic log of bologna, ready to be sliced and put into sandwiches. In other words, each of the 24 songs are meant to be taken in one by one, with screams, a mixture of distorted guitars and drums pushed to the limit, and a drummer who just plays without a sense of rhythm. Now you’re thinking “wait, this guy is offbeat”, and I would say no, but the outsider would think “holy crap, what is this guy doing?” AIDS Wolf’s form of music has no form, or at least it doesn’t conform to any sense of mainstream music. No verses, no choruses, and it’s hard to tell if there are beginnings, middles, or proper endings. Occasionally you will hear a bit of vocal/screaming continuity from Chloe Lum, and that might double as cues for the band to switch to another part of the song, or for the rest of the band to take a brief break from the cacophony they love to do.

Upon listening to this album and taking everything in one after the other, I also liked to hear the album as a whole, as if it’s one symphonic piece meant to be digested as one indigestible biscuit, but divided into 24 distinct movements. By the time you get to the end, then your stomach finally feels the effect and instead of things being multi-orgasmic, you just feel the urge to release and bust out some doots. It’s the kind of gospel, the unknown “speaking in tongues” that I wish the entire world would do and understand, it might be a little easier to relate to one another. It sounds incredible, and I found myself listening to this album consistently, over and over, as one indigestible biscuit before realizing I’m going to have to let go because my booty was tingling.

In laymen’s terms, “Ma Vie Banale Avant-Garde is a psychotic album of noise rock that sounds misplaced, but there are levels of organization in that chaos, which shows a bit of organization on their part. This isn’t just “every man and woman for themselves” and see what happens, but to enter into AIDS Wolf means knowing the risks but being confident that once you see the exit sign, you’ll feel satisfied. This is satisfaction at its best, and Ma Vie Banale Avant-Garde has become one of my favorite albums of the year.

ANTI-VIDEO: AIDS Wolf “Catholic For Rent”

What happens when you attempt to make a music video and things do not work out as good as you had hoped? Normally, most directors and artists would just add that to the box of stories they can explain in interviews. For AIDS Wolf, what works as a documentary on the making of their video was turned into the music video itself, or what they’re calling an “anti-video”. I wish more artists were this honest in presenting their music videos, where they look like they could be having fun but they seem to be the kind of band who are more spontaneous than lab rats for the world of organized choreography. Watch and find out.

RECORD CRACK: AIDS Wolf unite with Satan(ized)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
You psycho noise fan bastards are probably fans of both of these groups, and now you can hear them on a split 7″, courtesy of Badmaster Records.

AIDS Wolf offer up two tracks, “Tango Fatal” and “In From Under The Snow”, and both continue with the band’s unpredictable ways. You know how it is. Both tracks were recorded in 2007.

Satanized are to Philadephia what The Roots are to Philadelphia, which means something or nothing if you think about it. Anyway, Satanized pack a lot of punch in their music and are arguably more accessible than AIDS Wolf, but my guess is that Jessica Simpson will not be going out on a date with any of them. They offer up “Hope Is Lack Of Information”. All three songs on this record are brand new.

While the screenshot of the cover seems simplistic, you’ll have to see the sleeve inside and out, which was designed by Seripop. It’s on some kind of pinkish, purple-ish, moldy bologna-colored vinyl. Nice. Only 500 copies pressed, you can buy it directly from Badmaster or at any AIDS Wolf or Satanized performances (check their respective MySpace pages).
