REVIEW: Master Musicians Of Bukkake’s “Far West”

photo MasterMB13_cover_zps46b636b5.jpg For Master Musicians Of Bukkake’s latest journey, they are heading Far West (Important) but how far are they going? Upon entry, it seems that we’re listening to Pink Floyd’s “Welcome To The Machine”, but are we? Is there a thin line between a cover version and outright thievery, or is there a curtain of illusion where one might have to cross the line in order to not being able to detect the difference? It may not be an exact note-for-note cover but it seems these Master Musicians have found Richard Wright and brought him from the dead to jam with them.

The rest of album is a different (and arguably more original) means of tranquility, as they travel by foot from place to place, trying to find a bit of civility in these hectic times. Perhaps the recreation of “Welcome To The Machine” is the group’s way of making a successful accept out of it in order to enjoy the benefits of a more genuine world, and that the Far West may also be the distant East, depending on your means of direction. As with their latest album Totem Three, they continue to be explorers of that inner sound that many of us try to seek and find, and they’ve very much in tune with reaching it so that they’ll never stop being inspired.

REVIEW: Master Musicians Of Bukkake’s “Totem Three”

Photobucket With the kind of album covers they use, one would think Master Musicians Of Bukkake would end up being a very brutal death, black, stoner, or sludge metal band. Instead, what these guys do is combine a wide selection of sounds ranging from folk, progressive rock, electronic, and indigenous music to create something that must’ve been conceived either out of some really good drugs or simply from an intellect that wants to do more than an accepted norm.

It’s a 40 minute album with only seven songs, and the group starts off with a track that is very meditative, as if you stepped into a monk monastery just as they were about to start praying and chanting, and you cannot do anything but join them. The initial sound you hear are perhaps what you might find yourself hearing in the temple, your anticipation, and you eventually kneeling down to the healing powers of Bukkake. It’s the kind of album you could easily file alongside albums by Gong, Amon Düül II, and Faust, where these groups celebrated perhaps parts of their ethnic makeup, or simply touched on sounds and influences that for one part of the generation is exotic, but for others it’s who they are. Which brings to mind: what exactly is the sound of Bukkake? It’s not about a sound but a state of mind, and Master Musicians Of Bukkake are definitely explorers of that inner sound, one that may sound like a journey or if anything, a damn good time exploring sound in all of its glory. Amen.

REVIEW: Master Musicians Of Bukkake’s “Totem One”

Image and video hosting by TinyPic By the time you hear the album’s first sound of electronic guitar, you realize you have already heard two songs, with four more to go. By the time you’re not laughing at their name, you realize the Master Musicians Of Bukkake are jokesters only in name.

They are not a weird group of villagers from Sweden or a gang of crusty bikers from Nagono, but rather a band from Seattle. Totem One (Conspiracy) begins with various tribal-like songs where the rhythm less sound help stir up momentum in the form of a noisy meditation, before the natural sounds turn into something that sounds like Soundgarden, Jethro Tull, and Pink Floyd. At the same time, they incorporate various sounds and styles from other cultures, so one can imagine them being a group of gypsies looking for a place to stay and walking down a path and kind of sounds like some of the best European prog rock of the early to mid-1970’s (Osanna anyone?) Once you reach the last few moments of the last song, you wonder why someone had taken that long to create something so great? Or if not great, it’s pretty damn good.
