FREE MP3 DL: XFM: Scroobius Pip’s Beatdown – The Curious Tale of the Hip Hop Cover Version

There used to be a time when covering a hip-hop song was laughable. But artists like Tricky and the Barenaked Ladies covered songs like “Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos” and “Fight The Power” respectively, and it became a part of the norm, especially now that everyone has access to a camera and YouTube. XFM have put together a brief mix of hip-hop cover versions, created by Scroobius Pip’s Beatdown for XFM, and you may listen to or download both of them right now. Here are the track listings:

Part 1
Ricky V Valentine Ghetto Classics (Grandmaster Flash, NWA, Outkast & Jay Z)
Shawn Lee’s Ping Pong Orchestra One Thing (Amerie)
Carlos Nino & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (Tribe Called Quest)
The Klaxons No Diggity (Blackstreet)
Taggy Matcher Get Your Freak On (Missy Elliot)
B.A Baracus Band – Mama Said Knock You Out (LL Cool J)
Sarah Winters Runaway (Kayne West)

Part 2
Stereo Total Push It (Salt n’ Pepper)
Mato I Got 5 On It (Luniz)
Shawn Lee’s Ping Pong Orchestra Get UR Freak On (Missy Elliot)
Quantic Y Su Conjunto Los Miticos Del Ritmo – Nothin But A ‘G’ Thing (Snoop Dogg)
B.A Baracuss Band Jump (Kriss Kross)
Mark Ronson All I Need (feat. Wale & Tawiah) (Mary J Blige/Method Man)
El Michels Affair Shimmy Shimmy Ya (ODB)
Booker T. Jones feat Questlove Everything Is Everything (Lauren Hill)
Alyson Greenfield Gangsta’s Paradise (Coolio)

These are the track listing as shown on the Soundcloud page, I didn’t want to correct the credit for Salt-N-Pepa or the spelling of Lauryn Hill, but feel free to do it yourself. Also, I’m not sure how BLACKstreet and Amerie became hip-hop, who knows. Nonetheless, take a listen.

RECORD CRACK: Quantic & Alice Russell to release teardrop-shaped vinyl for new single

You may want to pick this up even if you do not like the artists and/or music, but more value if you do. Quantic & Alice Russell are still hard at work promoting their album Look Around The Corner (Tru-Thoughts), and the third single will be released on July 16th, called “I’d Cry” b/w “Here Again”. The song has the both of them joined by Combo Bárbaro, and in honor of the song, the record is being pressed as a tearshop-shaped record, in translucent blue. You can pre-order your copy from the UK by heading to Etch Shop.

(A video for the acoustic version of the song was posted here last year in April, which you may view by clicking here.)

The collabrative album between Quantic and Alice Russell, Look Around The Corner, is out, and here’s another B+ video in support of it, bringing them together with The Combo Bárbaro. A charmer.

When one blends a wide range of styles, and it feels good, you want to share it with the world. Or at least you want to share the feeling you had with the world, and I want to do this with this new video by the main man Quantic, who has Alice Russell singing with him, backed by The Combo Bárbaro for a live rendition of “Look Around The Corner”.

The video was beautifull shot by Brian “B+” Cross, as he gives the video a very warm, “living room”/”basement” feel and occasionally places the emphasis on things in the room you might not tend to focus on, not unlike his photographic work. You’ll know it when you see/feel/hear it, so do so. & Alice Russell with the Combo Barbaro – Look Around The Corner by Tru Thoughts

The studio version of this song has been released as a single, vinyl junkies are able to enjoy it as a 10″ courtesy of the good people at Tru-Thoughts Records, available directly from Fat Beats. Digital fiends can purchase it from Amazon below.
