REVIEW: The Growlers’ “Guilded Pleasures”

photo TheGrowlers_cover_zpsccf651bf.jpg The album is called Guilded Pleasures (Everloving) but I found myself wondering when the pleasure would make itself known. The Growlers play this kind of surf-meets-lounge style, and normally I would eat that stuff up as I am a fan of both styles. Then you have a singer that sounds like Bob Dylan and while I’m not thrown-off by the novelty of it, I wondered if this was all they were going to offer me. I tried getting into the songs, then the construction of the songs into an album, and I found myself coming up with various words, all of which lead to me thinking “I just don’t like this”. Or I should say, it’s not that I hate it, but I don’t find myself drawn to anything, enough to make me want to play this repeatedly. If this was played within a playlist of other artists that sounded the same, it would get completely lost because I could not detect anything different. A pass on this one.

SOME STUFFS: The Growlers want to pass along their “Humdrum Blues”

 photo TheGrowlers_old_zpse17d50e3.jpg
The Growlers have a new EP due out on November 12th called Gilded Pleasures (Everloving) so before you check the group out on the tour that will get underway in support of it, have a listen to a track from the EP called “Humdrum Blues”.

As for the tour, they’re calling it the Burgerama Tour, which can only mean good things. This will take them from British Columbia to Santa Ana, California, where they will end the tour by participating in Beach Goth II, which may sound like an oxymoron but if it works for someone, it can work for you.

REVIEW: The Growlers’ “Hung At Heart”

The Growlers photo Growlers_cover_zpsff122f55.jpg Surf music? Surf rock… in 2013? Yes indeed, and it comes from The Growlers out of Southern California, and their Hung At Heart album (Everloving) is reminiscent of those days when nothing mattered but surf, sand, shorts, bathing suits, and… well, surf.

If you wish, you can listen to this album as a bit of our innocence lost. Many of us, including myself, weren’t around when surf music was the rage, where everyone had to rock out for two minutes and 30 seconds or less at a time, but these guys have that sound down right. It’s not just the music that moves them, but the lyrics that are about love found, love lost, and love wished for, much of which was influenced by early R&B and country, genres where they cut the crap and just gave you what you should hear so you could wiggle on the floor, and move on to the next story.

The entire album isn’t like that, for tracks like “One Million Lovers” and “Pet Shop Eyes” are knee deep in garage rock richness, while “Living In A Memory” sounds ready made for a hoedown. Some of this may sound like the works of The Mummies, The Phantom Surfers, Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet, or the many projects of Billy Childish, but that innocence also had to do with being punk as fuck because you wanted to buy a guitar or farfisa organ and just enjoy yourself. Hung At Heart is an album of joy, although if we are to get technical for a moment, at 15 songs, this would be considered a double album in the late 50’s/early 60’s, perhaps way too much to rock out to but not enough for modern tastes. By the end of the album, the surf vibe still shines strong and even if you’ve never been anywhere close to a beach or sand, Hung At Heart shows that when it comes to good ol’ rock’n’roll, you can still use your mind to imagine its cool factor.

VIDEO: Feeding People “Island Universe”

How are all of you readers feeling?

I said: HOW ARE ALL OF YOU READERS FEELING?

HOW MANY OF YOU OUT THERE LIKE TO BE FEEDING PEOPLE?

Okay, most of you aren’t going to get it, but what you can and will get is this wet video by Feeding People, where they speak about an “Island Universe”, a place where one will be able to live forever in peace and love. The video comes off like a very twisted movie from the 1970’s that really goes nowhere, and at the end you’re going “what in the hell did I just watch?” The end result is a song that’ll hook you and become your next earworm. The song is the band’s latest 7″ 45 on Innovative Leisure, which you can purchase directly from the label by clicking here.

In October, the band will be doing a small handful of shows in California with a number of other bands you may be into, so check them out if you can.

FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD: Denney & The Jets’ “Fun Girls”

It’s great when a band not only goes back to the roots of rock’n’roll, but actually understands how it sounds and where it came from. Denney & The Jets do this in a song that sounds like everything from Chuck Berry and Little Richard to Rockpile and The Rolling Stones. The music has always been primal, and the band talk about their interests and urges in “Fun Girls”. The song is from their brand new EP on Limited Fanfare Records, and they’ll be going on tour where some shows will features The Growlers.
