Cut Chemist has just posted a new video/track for “Rhythm Method”, which originates from the project he did earlier this year called One Day On Earth
. “Rhythm Method” features Myka 9 on rhymes, Deantoni Parks on drums, Merrill Garbus (tUnE-yArDs) on the ‘ukulele, and Vox Populi on keyboards.
You can also see One Day On Earth below.
As they prepare to go on tour this week (tour dates posted here), Portland’s Themes have released a new track from their forthcoming album, Loveweapons”, and you can take a listen to it by playing the track below or clicking here. The Brandon Eggleston-engineered/produced track features Noah Bernstein of tUnE-yArDs helping out, and I think this is the right amount of motivation needed to see them live. Catch them if you can.
A new compilation album called (RED) Hot + FELA will be a return to honoring the music of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti while also raising funds and and awareness to help deliver an AIDS Free Generation by 2015. All of this is being done through RedRush.com.
Yesterday (June 1st), a cover of Fela’s “Lady” was released to represent the forthcoming compilation album, and this is performed by tUnE-yArDs, Angelique Kidjo, ?uestlove, and Akua Naru, and the collaboration sounds incredible. This is not ?uestlove’s first time honoring the music of Fela, for he had a hand in putting together the Red, Hot & Riot album eleven years ago that brought his music to a new generation.
(RED) Hot & FELA will be released by Knitting Factory Records later this year. If you like this cover of “Lady”, you can order it from iTunes through the following links:
When music festival line-ups are announced, even in early February, it makes enduring cold temperatures worth it. Some of the artists scheduled to play there include The Roots, Shabazz Palaces, Grynch, The Physics, Beck, Bon Iver, Tune-Yards, Mogwai, Childish Gambino, St. Vincent, The Walkmen, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The Mark Lanegan Band, Shabazz Palaces, Araabmuzik, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Howlin Rain, The Physics, and many more. While the song is called “En Memoria”, the intro to this is distinctively Hawaiian, and I know its sample source.
The song is from Elephant & Castle‘s forthcoming album, Transitions, to be released by Plug Research on March 13, 2012. “En Memoria” features Tune-Yards on vocals, but not the Hawaiian part.
Elephant & Castle is David Vincent, and he calls his album something on the ambient side, maybe even meditative. He cites DJ Shadow and Flying Lotus as influences. Listen.

Her name is Merrill Garbus but when she makes music, she’s tUnE-yArDs. Her style of music comes from the records her parents shared with her, which she describes as “Old Timey fiddling, Revolver, Django”, along with a love for mid-80’s pop radio and “an bsession with Christmas music”. She may very well have the Firestone and Colonel Sanders Christmas albums in her collection, which means some of that rubbed off on her self-released debut album, BiRd-BrAiNs, most of which was recorded on a hand-held cassette recorder, and not surprisingly was sold as a cassette. The album was recently picked up by the Portland, Oregon label Marriage Records, who will release the album on vinyl and make it available as a digital download on March 10th (if you want it on CD, you[‘ll have to buy the record and convert or download it and transfer the files yourself).
A week after the re-release, tUnE-yArDs will be at this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) for a bit of playing and schmoozing, followed by a small handful of live shows:
March 18-21… Austin, TX (SXSW)
April 9… Olympia, WA (to be announced)
April 10… Seattle, WA (Healthy Times Fun Club)
April 11… Portland, OR (to be announced)
