RECORD CRACK: Score a test pressing from the Skratchy Seal (QBert approved)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
As a Hawaiian kid, I often looked forward to going to Sea Life Park because it would mean I would be on the other side of the island. For Hawaiians, that meant “a long trip” even though it was under half an hour. But I would often see the seals there, and I was fascinated because of their appearance in commercials that used to air during my favorite children’s show, Checkers & Pogo. I also remember the one with the dolphin where there was a singer in it who said “what a feeling… SEA LIFE PARK” and the dolphin would jump to the camera lens and it would freeze. It was cool looking. Back to the seals. A few of them were dancers and I clearly remember one of them doing hand gestures that seemed musical, or at least rhythmic. It is quite possible that it was Skratchy Seal, who would end up getting involved in DJ’ing. A seal making music? Who knew?

With the help of DJ QBert, Skratchy Seal is releasing a 10 year anniversary album, or what they’re calling a “double sided skipless record” featuring various sounds, bleeps, bloops, and seal sounds. The album will be released through Thud Rumble, but they have one test pressing that they are making available through the tug of war digital means called eBay. In other words, you can bid for it here. The album was pressed at Record Technology Incorporated (RTI), known for some quality work throughout the years.

You can also check out what’s going on at QBert Skratch University and perhaps the Skratchy Seal will show up. I hear that the Seal may be hanging out playing some basketball at the court in Papakolea, but don’t tell anyone.

REVIEW: DJ Packo’s “Aquadust (A Dubstep/Turntablism Mix)”

Image and video hosting by TinyPic DJ Packo has been around for a short time, but after listening to Aquadust (Skratchmore), I almost find that hard to believe.

The 36-track megamix is A Dubstep/Turntablism Mix as the subtitle indicates, but during the duration of the mix, I had so much fun listening to how songs went into one another, how they seemed to communicate with each other not only back to back, but even long distance, it’s as if he’s playing games with the tracks and he’s waiting to see if anyone has figured it out. It’s dubstep so one might find it easy to just kick back and let the music speak for itself, but he’s DJ’ing within the program (thus it being a “turntablism mix”) and if he’s capable of doing this in a controlled setting, I can only wonder what he pulls off live. I can only wonder how much more powerful this music is with the volume on high. I hope DJ Packo gets more attention outside of Hawai’i so he can either tour with other like minded artists or get into some serious collaborations and productions with others.

(You can download Aquadust for free by looking at DJ Packo’s Soundcloud page, or if you want a hard copy on CD, e-mail him at djpacko@NOSPAMgmail.com or via twitter @DJPacko.)

RECORD CRACK: Cut Chemist to take part in Delicious Vinyl All-Star DJ Workshop

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Are you in the Los Angeles area this weekend, and have nothing to do? You may want to participate in a DJ workshop created by the folks at Delicious Vinyl, as Cut Chemist will be demonstrating his skills and share some knowledge about his love of records and turntables.

The workshop will also feature such L.A. hip-hop legends such as The Arabian Prince, KDAY DJ M. Walk, and the founder of Turntable U., Tony G..

The workshop itself is free, but they can only let in so many people inside to take part so send an RSVP to info@rephlektorink.com. Cut Chemist is scheduled to start his lecture at around 5:15pm.

VIDEO: The Bay Area Sistah Sound (B.A.S.S.) are doing it for themselves

http://www.vidsf.com/media/js/mediaplayer-embed.swf

There are many in hip-hop who have asked what happened to the female MC’s, as there seems to be no one in the mainstream who is doing their thing. The female DJ, however, is more obscure and almost a non-existent entity unless it’s someone in a clothing commercial. But if you know where to go, you’ll know where to find, see, and hear some of the best female DJ’s around. Head to San Francisco for a look at a new collective called Bay Area Sistah Sound (B.A.S.S.), formed by DJ Zita (Golden Soundscapes) and Pam The Funkstress (The Coup). They are taking their own love of DJ’ing and all that is vinyl to the forefront, to prove once again that DJ’ing is a place for both women and men, and that some of the best turntablists and vinyl junies are ladies who will not hesitate to go in front of you at a record convention to go through the crate you’re looking at.

SOME STUFFS: DJ Clue looking for DJ’s in his reality show

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
DJ Clue? Reality show? I don’t know, it could be a huge mess and maybe not. Fortunately he’s not in a show with New York, but instead it’s a reality show that will involve Clue looking for wanna be DJ’s who want to take their skills to the next level.

If you have what it takes, here’s the deal. The show will be called Who’s The DJ?, and 15 DJ’s will be chosen to compete to become the #1 upcoming DJ in the U.S. Auditions are being held now and will last until the end of April. You can submit your entry now but you have to follow these guidelines explicitly, for if you don’t, your submission will be rejected. Rejected submissions will not be notified either, so if you submit something and don’t hear from them, that’s your answer.

The Winning DJ will become DJ Clue’s opening DJ and will get to DJ in front of celebritiess, athletes, models, actors and more. The winning DJ also gets a deal with Desert Storm, and it will definitely help you network and bring you to the next level of things.

Here are the instructions, make sure to read carefully:

Send a video promo to us with the following information:
a)Your name
b)How long have you been DJing?
c)Where do you DJ? (weddings,clubs,parties,etc)
d)How old are you? (You must be at least 18 years of age and able to prove it to enter)
e)Tell us why you are the best DJ in the country.
f)Short video clip of you DJing (must be no longer than 1 minute)

While being a DJ is all about your sound and presentation, this contest involves you being on a television show as well so remember:

No audio promos!!! This is a video ONLY submission process so we know that it is you who is DJing and not some mix cd that you bought uptown and popped your name on. Any audio submissions will be immediately rejected.

If you think you have what it takes and aren’t afraid of the cameras eye, you can send your videos to djcluecasting@gmail.com
