VIDEO: Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s “Shakedown Street”

This is the first Unknown Mortal Orchestra music I’ve had on my site in two years and once you hear the first few notes, some of you will say ‘are you sure this is UMO?” It sounds funky but yes, this is the same UMO. Not only that but this is a Grateful Dead cover. The Grateful Dead get funky? In a better world it can happen and it has happened here. This is on a new Grateful Dead tribute album called Day Of The Dead, out on CD and digital with a vinyl pressong on its way September 9th.

SOME STUFFS: Unknown Mortal Orchestra offer an Otis Redding classic before starting tour

Unknown Mortal Orchestra made a promotional stop in London and recorded a cover of Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay” for Marc Riley on BBC6 Radio. Now back in North America, the group are about to start what seems like will be an endless journey for them on the road. The full tour itinerary can be found here, but they’ll start their trip tomorrow night (Friday, June 14th) in Bellingham, Washington at The Wild Buffalo.

  • On a related note, the Mississippi duo Bass Drum Of Death were going to go on tour with UMO from the Bellingham show through the Hamden, Connecticut show at The Space on June 29th. However, band member John Barrett collapsed in Madrid, Spain during their European jaunt, and under doctor’s orders was told to rest. Bass Drum Of Death plan on joining UMO in Fargo, North Dakota on June 22nd.

    $ w/ Jackson Scott

     photo JacksonScott_old_zpsb9ef7dbf.jpg
As you can see in the late September/early to mid-October shows marked by $, Unknown Mortal Orchestra will have Jackson Scott opening up for them. He will be releasing his latest album for Fat Possum called Melbourne on July 23rd, and his opening dates will be a way to get his music out to be heard by UMO fans and everyone else. What to expect from a Scott live show? His bio states it this way:
(His) live act is to that of the occultist – achieving eternal perfection. A trio that is liquidating the senses, seeking the perfect elixir, channeling kraut, punk, surf and pop as one psych rock solvent.

WHAT?! Sounds nuts, correct? Will he be able to unleash that energy opening for UMO? You will see.

SOME STUFFS: Unknown Mortal Orchestra share creative new video and SXSW itinerary

After a very fine performance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, Unknown Mortal Orchestra follow it up with the release of a video for “Swim And Sleep”, a piece of animated that involves graffiti, peeping, and fapping. Yes, fapping. You may take a peek (fapping optional) right now, or whenever it is safe.

On a slightly safer note, the group have added dates of their current tour, which now includes their shows at this year’s SXSW in Austin, Texas:

March 13… Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop (KEXP Showcase) (5:30pm)
March 13… Scoot Inn (Life or Death PR Showcase) (11pm)
March 14… 1100 Warehouse (Pitchfork Unofficial Day Party) (3:45pm)
March 14… Red 7 (Jagjaguwar Label Showcase) (1am)
March 15… Stubbs BBQ (SPIN Media Official Party) (1:50pm)
March 16… Old Emos (Brooklyn Vegan) (5pm)

For the 1am show at Red 7, I’m not sure if that means early March 14th, or early March 15th, so consult these venues for specifics. UMO have also two festival shows this summer:

June 28… New York, NY (Seaport Music Festival at Pier 17)
July 4-7… Roskilde, Denmark (Roskilde Festival)
